Fact: Over 132,000 fire damper survey and testing reports created each year

As one of the UK’s leading fire damper survey and testing companies, Urmson Fire Specialists Ltd can help ensure that your equipment is in top working order to keep both your building and its occupants safe.

Fire dampers are passive fire protection products installed in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) ducts.  They significantly prevent the spread of fire inside the ductwork through fire-resistance rated walls and floors. They slow the progression of fire allowing people sufficient time to evacuate a building safely during a building fire.

As with any safety apparatus, these need to be regularly tested and maintained in order to ensure that if and when the time comes, they will work and do their job effectively. For more information on how often they should be tested read of blog – How often should fire dampers be tested?

Fire damper testing & surveys

Fire Damper

This closes once the duct temperature reaches a high enough level to melt a fusible link, interrupting migratory airflow and therefore resisting the passage of flame

Smoke Damper

This is a device installed in ducts and air transfer openings of an air distribution or smoke control system subsequently designed to resist the passage of air and smoke

Fire/Smoke Damper

A combined fire / smoke damper which is similar to a fire damper in fire resistance rating and likewise also prevents the spread of smoke

BS 9999:2017 states that arrangements should be made for all fire dampers to be tested at regular intervals by a competent person on completion of the installation and at least annually, and to be repaired or replaced immediately if found faulty. Spring operated fire dampers should be tested annually and fire dampers situated in dust laden and similar atmospheres should be tested much more frequently at periods suited to the degree of pollution

Our fire / smoke damper survey and testing includes:

  • Mark the location of fire / smoke dampers on building drawings (if available)

  • Dampers will be number labelled for reference in the reports

  • Reports will identify type and mechanism of dampers and provide sizes

  • Reports will identify damper accessibility

  • Provide photographic evidence of dampers opened, closed, defects / inaccessibility

  • Reports will indicate whether dampers are a pass or fail

  • Reports will identify any defects found, remedial works required and assign responsibility party

  • Single downloadable reports available 24 hours following testing procedure via Boris software client login

  • Final reports available for export in single, bulk and excel versions via Boris software client login

  • Remedial work based upon the report can be undertaken
