MICROBIOLOGICAL AIR SAMPLING
Microbiological air sampling is usually undertaken to assess air quality in areas such as operating theatres, pharmacy aseptic units /clean rooms, treatment rooms and such like to determine if the environment meets acceptable limits. Sampling may be active or passive using selective or non-selective media depending on whether clients are checking for total microbial counts or mould investigations.
Microbiological air sampling is carried out to ensure that the operating theatre ventilation is optimal in order to prevent airborne micro-organisms from entering surgical wounds. Airborne contaminants may enter an operating room via the supply air, shed by operating staff (skin fragments with bacteria), surgical activities or transferred from adjacent spaces
