Microbiological Safety Cabinets (MSC), also called Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC) are laboratory ventilated enclosures most commonly used in biotechnology, pharmaceutical and clinical laboratory processes. There are three main classes of MSC: Class 1; Class 2; and Class 3.
The COSHH Regulations, in relation to local exhaust ventilation require thorough examination and testing as part of routing maintenance at intervals not exceeding 14 months. For MSCs used for work at Containment Level 1 (CL1) annually; CL2 six monthly advisory; and CL3 six monthly mandatory.
