FD60 Fire Door Specification Explained

FD60 Fire Doors are designed to delay the spread of fire and smoke from one room to another for a minimum period of time.

The most common ratings of Fire Doors are FD30, FD30s, FD60 and FD60s, so it is important to understand which fire door and fire door frame specification you should use in your premises.

In this article we focus on FD60 and FD60s fire doors so that you can determine which are most suitable for your building type and use.

  • An FD60 Fire Door means the manufacturer has specified the door combined with the correct frame can withstand fire for at least 60 minutes.
  • An FD60s Fire Door means the manufacturer has specified the door with the relevant frame can withstand both fire, cold smoke and hot smoke for at least 60 minutes.

F60 Fire Doors Form Part of your Fire Compartmentation or Fire Stopping Plan

FD60 and FD60s Fire Doors are typically used in commercial buildings and where members of the public gather, but they can also be used in residential dwellings.

Hotels, schools, hospitals, office blocks, shopping centres, laboratories and large manufacturing units use FD60 Fire Door or FD60s Fire Doors as they typically contain a large number of people and space. They may also have more complex exit routes, due to the size of the building, or contain expensive equipment that requires additional protection.

By preventing the spread of fire for at least 60 minutes (compared to FD30 Fire doors that only contain for a minimum of 30 minutes), building occupants have a longer duration of time to exit the building safely.

Property owners should have a Fire Compartmentation or Fire Stopping Plan, which you can read and understand more about in our Fire Stopping Guide.

FD60s Intumescent Strip

The Intumescent Strip between the fire door and fire door frame is a key element to preventing the escape of fire and smoke from one room to another. The Intumescent Strip expands in heat, forming a complete seal, so it important that these are well maintained and inspected regularly. Whilst a FD60 Fire Door should contain a fire for up to 60 minutes, a FD60s Fire should contain both fire and hot and cold smoke.
